Masters' degree
On 7/3/2018 , the postgraduate student ''Zainab SHaker Mahmood'' was granted an MSc. In Computer Engineering for his thesis entitled : “ Robust Multiple Model Adaptive Dynamic Positioning of Quadrotor Helicopter System
Abstract
The quadrotor control has been one of the benchmark control problems. As a matter of fact, designing a flight control for micro scale quadrotor is still a challenging task because of its under-actuated feature, also, it is considered as a multivariable and highly nonlinear system due to its dynamics, having strong coupling between translation and angular motion and affected by external disturbances associated with flight environment, for instance, the effect of large payload variation. This provides the need to design a robust control. The controller needs to be able to keep up with sudden changes in addition to, the ability to find better tracking performance against modeling error and uncertainties
In this work, two types of state feedback control methods have been implemented; the first optimal controller is represented by LQR. This controller achieves stability of the aircraft, but it takes time and a small error still appears in some states. So, this provides the need for using LQ-servo controller which eliminates the error due to an integral part and provides a tracking design. Also, the LQ-servo control method has proved its durability towards the maximum variation in the wind gust.
Compared with LQR, in LQ-servo, better improvement has been obtained using Root Mean Square (RMS) and Integral Absolute Error ( IAE) values of tracking error which have been presented for linear and angular movements
Classical Multiple Model Adaptive Control (CMMAC) is another type of state feedback control. It is an adaptive control which embodies in its structure a bank of filters, Kalman filter has been used where each filter has been designed for a specific value of payload variation, and set of controllers, which was provided by the LQ-servo design. CMMAC meets better performance of tracking design for all payload mass variations

On 8/3/2018 , the postgraduate student '' Rusul Haitham Hadi'' was granted an MSc. In Computer Engineering for his thesis entitled : “Design and Implementation of Zigbee Transceiver Network based MATLAB System
Abstract
This research focuses on implementing a digital transceiver system for Zigbee sensor device based on IEEE 802.15.4. System performance has been verified considering to BER under Adaptive White Gaussian Noise (AWGN) channel and Rayleigh fading channel, besides showing the effect of employing the Direct Sequence Spread Spectrum (DSSS) technique. Further system improvement has been performed for the system under Rayleigh fading channel by means of equalization, where two equalization algorithms have been applied independently that are Least Mean Square (LMS) and Kalman equalizer. The results have shown better performance in presence of DSSS and when using LMS. However, Kalman equalizer has achieved well signal recovery since it was capable of errors converging faster than the LMS equalizer

The Second Session of the Spring Break Training Camp Held by the Rehabilitation and Employment Unit in the Control and Systems Engineering Department.

On 30/1/2018, the Rehabilitation and Employment Unit in the Control and Systems Engineering Department held the second session of the spring break training camp under the title "Code LAB, Web Design Version". The course was given by the specialists of d3 Studio in the field of programming and design.
The course included the following topics:
- HTML, CSS
- BOOTSTRAP 4 CSS FRAME WORK
- JAVASCRIPT
- VUE.JS FARME WORK
The course lasted 8 days, 4 hours a day. The eighth day was dedicated to proposing projects through what the attendees had learned in advance in the session. The head of the Department, Dr. Azad Raheem Kareem, distributed certificates of thanks and appreciation to Zain Iraq, who was the sponsor of the training course, and d3 Studio for their efforts in giving the session. In addition, certificates of participation were jointly distributed by the Department and Zain Iraq.

On January 28, 2018, the Rehabilitation and Employment Unit gave the first session of the spring break training camp entitled "Arduino from scratch to professionalism". The students learned Arduino, its applications and how to access advanced projects, which was useful for forth year project students in particular. The course was given by External Engineer Ali Akram Sa'eed and it included the following topics:
- An introduction to the world of electronics and the most important pieces that we will learn with an explanation of the beginning of the installation of the program and the most important problems that will face us. The explanation of the program was reinforced with the application of a simple example.
- Explanation of the most important features of the Arduino Board and the input and output ports with an introduction to programming language, beginning with basic commands.
- Use of PWM and how to deal with analogue and digital inputs and how to coordinate them at the same time.
- Explanation of the conditions, commands and important functions used in the programs, with an example for each command (if, if else, for, switch case, while, tone).
- The most important step in programming is learning to write a code that makes the controller perform several steps at the same time.
- Explaining the means of communication in a simplified way and applying projects on them including GSM Bluetooth, RF433, IR
- The fundamentals of Servo Stepper Motor and the introduction of advanced projects and how to update them to suit the needs of the workplace.
The duration of the course was 4 days, 3 hours per day. On the last day of the session, each student was asked to propose project ideas through what they have learned in the course. The ideas were excellent and useful in our scientific and practical life.
At the end of the training camp, Assistant Head of the Department for Administrative Affairs, Dr. Ahmed Ibraheem Abd Al-Kareem distributed certificates of participation to the lecturer and attendees.
